Katherine & Jason's Wedding on Saturday, March 8, 2008

Thanks, everyone, for your patience on this post. I've been looking forward to this wedding for awhile since the groom, Jason, is a classmate of mine from my graduate days at VCU. Jason was a year into the program when I arrived and I learned a lot from him: I was a newbie in photo and even more clueless when it came to indie film. I looked up to Jason for his no-nonsense attitude and professional productions, I have been greatly influenced by his work. So I was deeply honored when Katherine and Jason asked us to document their wedding.

I can't bump into my VCU past without confronting my professional present: wedding photography was never my intended profession. At first it was a means to an end and hey, it sure beat stripping. But when school was over, I never applied for that full time teaching job, I didn't even look. Truth is, when I get home from a shoot and download the cards, I'm a kid again dumping my sack of candy all over the floor after hours of trick-or-treating to see what I got. Did I get that expression? That light? That moment? That angle? Weddings play out as a visual cliche but look closer: can photographers document weddings in a way that isn't boring, contrived or fictitious... can we make photos that breathe... all with little to no control over what's happening and while staying the heck out of the way? I rarely feel like we fully succeed at that but here's a different measure: If you don't know the people featured in our photos but you feel like you do then at least we're on the right track!

Katherine and Jason gave us a timeless wedding to shoot at the beautiful Jefferson hotel. The ceremony that took place in front of the grand windows of the Flemish room was heartfelt and the dinner reception in the Empire Room was classic. The flowers, linens and other details were dressed in the same hues of the historic rooms: red, champagne, gold, ivory and teal. Here's a style swatch so you can see how it all came together:

A display of Cuban cigars, cutters and matches were enjoyed by guests on the mezzanine throughout the night. In lieu of a wedding cake, each guest received an individually made red velvet cake for dessert. Everything was warm, elegant and personal.

I think we came away with a pretty genuine record of the day but you be the judge: here's a slideshow with some of our favorites from the day. If you were a guest at the wedding and would like to receive an email when all the photos are available for viewing, click here. Congrats to Katherine and Jason and many thanks to their kind families for their hospitality. I love this job.
