Kristen & Jimmy Elope on Friday, September 14th

I believe this is the first time I have used the word "elope" here... Interesting that there's a word in the English language which loosely translates to "wanna get married but avoid a wedding" and if we have a word for it, that means most of us have at least thought about doing it. When Kristen contacted us to shoot her elopement I admit to being a little jealous of her and Jimmy... avoiding the fripperies and getting down to the nitty gritty, isn't this what so many of us want to do? Sam and I feared the wrath of my mother.
When asked why I love living here in Richmond I always mention the trains...I hear the whistles day and night even when they're not in view. You'll have to excuse the fortune cookie philosophy here but I think its good to live amidst train tracks, they remind me of a poem engraved in my parent's wedding rings. My folks don't know who wrote these words but saw them scratched into a table in a restaurant they frequented in the East Village and thought they were fitting to describe marriage:
(in Mom's ring) Love is a journey wherever it begins.
(in Dad's ring) A journey is all it is no matter where it ends.
I never know where those trains are coming from or where they are going.

Kristen and Jimmy met at Main Street Station downtown along with 4 close friends and an officiant (plus Sam and myself) for an intimate wedding ceremony. Its tough to stay unobtrusive when you make up close to a third of the people in the room but who's counting? During their vows a train came through on tracks parallel to the building and just yards away from the windows behind them. You can't tell from the pictures but the 9 of us know it happened.
After the ceremony we took a few photos around the station, the most beautiful light was right underneath the tressels. Then we walked through the Canal Walk, the location of the famous triple crossings, to take more photos with an urban backdrop.

As it turns out, Jimmy is a devoted frisbee golf player and he and Kristen like to hit the course together. So we decided to take some pics on the golf course and Kristen nailed every putt. It was a good day...

Oh ya, did I mention that Kristen made her own bouquet? Artists are pretty versatile like that... We have VCU arts in common, check out Kristen's art work.

We ended at Libby Hill Park overlooking the city. We really appreciate Kristen and Jimmy's willingness to take so many pictures and we hope y'all had a great day at the beach just following. We hope this slideshow helps your family members feel like they were there too. To see all the photos (yes, there's more...), click here.
Congratulations K&J and we hope you have a great reception in Tennessee!
